Candy Matterson

My first love was silversmithing and metalwork which I studied for my BA. This was followed by 35 years teaching design technology at secondary school level. In 2017 I completed an MA in Jewellery at UCA Farnham.

Recent themes of work have been based around the idea of interactive touch between the piece and wearer or observer.

I aim to make pieces which generate movement in response to touch or wearer movement. Surface tactility juxtaposed with smooth surfaces are stroke-able.

I make use of Keum Boo (a Korean technique using heat application of high carat gold) to highlight texture changes and add colour.

Very recently I have made a number of more traditional items, some using gold to practise and extend the range of techniques I use.

Generating the idea of play and playfulness within the things I make which allow you to fiddle with the piece, is an aim.
